The
Carpenters Legacy Lives On...
Close
To You
Information/Comments:
Close
To You certainly got the ball rolling for the continued success
of the Carpenters in the early 1970s. Close To You the single
stayed at the #1 chart position in the United States for a
month, and the album itself reached as high as #2.
When
Richard Carpenter was asked on a PBS interview, "What
was your favorite recording experience?", Richard replied
"Probably Close To You". Richard also commented
in the Close to You documentary that the song Close to You
is what made the Carpenters as a group an overnight success.
Both
the song and album Close To You also went on to give the Carpenters
early success at the Grammy awards, winning Best Contemporary
Vocal Performance and Best New Artist.
I
personally think that the Carpenters "Close to You"
album is the best of all the original studio albums. Every
song on the album is very good to great. I especially like
"Reason To Believe", which Karen Carpenter herself
said in concert was one of her's and Richard's earliest favorite
songs to sing together.
I
also just love "Love is Surrender", which was written
by Ralph Carmichael, another favorite of mine, who wrote one
of my favorite albums from my life "His Land", with
songs by Cliff Richard and Cliff Barrows. The Live Concert
that the Carpenters did for the BBC also has a wonderful rendition
of the song.
