The
Carpenters Legacy Lives On...
Now
& Then
Information/Comments:
The
Carpenters "Now & Then" album was released in
1973. My favorite songs on this album are "Sing",
"This Masquerade", and "Yesterday Once More".
One interesting note about the album cover is that it showcases
two "posessions" of the Carpenters. It shows both
Richard's red Ferrari, along with the Carpenters family home,
which I believe was the home that Karen and Richard bought
for their parents on Newville Ave.
I
Believe "This Masquerade" is one of the best songs
that showcases Karen Carpenter's beautiful voice. I mean Karen
sings this song so perfectly that it's hard to imagine someone
other than Karen singing this slow-paced, beautiful song.
In the Carpenters final TV Special, "Music, Music, Music",
both Karen and singing legend Ella Fitzgerald sing a memorable
duet for this song.
I
think the instrumental song "Heather" is one of
the most beautiful piano compositions I've ever heard in my
life. It reminds me very much of the theme music from the
1970s TV Show "The Incredible Hulk". The first time
I remember hearing this music was on the Carpenters TV Concert
in Budokan Japan. It wasn't until later, while re-listening
to the "Now and Then" album that I realized this
beautiful music was on this record.
"Yesterday
Once More" is probably my favorite Carpenters song, along
with "Only Yesterday". I think "Yesterday Once
More" represents the very best of the Carpenters music
with both its nostalgic words and melody.
Probably
the only minor reccomendation for the album would be to take
out, or at least lower the volume of the "screaching
of tires" during the "Deadman's Curve" oldies
medly. I realize it's supposed to go with the song, but for
me, it's a bit like hearing fingernails on a chalkboard. Other
than that, this is a great album.
