Close To You

Close To You / I Kept On Loving You - single:

The Carpenters "Close To You" song/single was what made the Carpenters at least "seem" like an overnight success. What a perfect song for Richard and Karen Carpenter. "Close To You" reached #1 on the charts in just a few weeks, and stayed at #1 for about a month.

The song "Close To You" was originally written by Burt Bacharach and had been performed by individuals like Dionne Warwick and Richard Chamberlin years earlier.

Herb Alpert was the one who suggested the song to Richard Carpenter. Richard was not a big fan of the song at first, but realized during the recording of the song, that this truly was the right song for the Carpenters.

"Close To You" went on to give the Carpenters two Grammy awards. One was for Best Contemporary Vocal Performance and the other was for Best New Artist.
