On the back of the Carpenters album "Lovelines", Richard Carpenter includes the following about this song:

"Honolulu City Lights" - Karen and I heard this song while vacationing in Hawaii. It was a local hit sung by Hawaiians Keola and Kapono Beamer and composed by the former. We liked it immediately and recorded the song in 1978."
