The Carpenters Legacy Lives On...

Karen Sings and Richard Plays

The Carpenters Songs and Lyrics: A

This is by no means a complete Carpenter's song list, but I'll be adding more and more songs as time goes by.

Some of these songs were not actually written by the Carpenters, however many of them were made popular by the singing of Karen Carpenter and the arrangements of Richard Carpenter.

Carpenters Songs: A

A Song for You Lyrics

I've been so many places in my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs I've made some bad rhyme
I've acted out my love in stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we're alone now and I'm singing this song for you

I know your image of me is what I hope to be
I've treated you unkindly but darlin' can't you see
There's no one more important to me
Darlin' can't you please see through me
Cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song for you

(*) you tought me precious secrets of the truth withholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
But now I'm so much better and if my words don't come together
Listen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding

(**) I love you in a place where there's no space or time
I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine
And when my life is over remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song for you

Repeat (*)
Repeat (**)

We were alone and I was singing this song for you

Notes: The song "A Song For You" was first sung by the Carpenters on their album of the same name. More information about the "A Song For You" record album/cd can be found here.

Many fans may also remember Karen and Richard singing the first part of this song at the very beginning of their fifth and final TV Special "Music Music Music". Additional information about all the Carpenters Television Specials can be found here.

All You Get From Love Is A Love Song Lyrics

Like sailin' on a sailin' ship to nowhere
Love took over my heart like an ocean breeze
As seagulls fly I knew that I was losin'
Love was washed away with the driftin' tide
Oh it's a dirty old shame
When all you get from love is a love song
That's got you layin' up nights
Just waitin' for the music to start
It's such a dirty old shame
When you got to take the blame for a love song
Because the best love songs are written
With a broken heart

And now the tears in my eyes are ever blinding
The future that lies before me I cannot see
Although tomorrow I know the sun is rising
Lighting up the world for everyone, but not for me
Oh it's a dirty old shame
When all you get from love is a love song
That's got you layin' up nights
Just waitin' for the music to start
It's such a dirty old shame
When you got to take the blame for a love song
Because the best love songs are written
With a broken heart

(repeat)

Well it's a dirty old shame

(repeat)

Notes: This song was first heard on the Carpenters "Passage" album in 1977. Information about this album can be found here.

And when He Smiles Lyrics

And when he smiles he makes the sun shine
He wouldn't think to make it rain
Happiness runs in the family
And he's a boy from the good old earth and the high tree forest
And he's just about the happiest boy that I ever knew

And when he smiles he makes me sigh
He doesn't have a point of view
Happiness runs in the family
And he's a boy from the good old earth and the high tree forest
And he's just about the happiest boy that I ever knew

And when he smiles he makes the sun shine
And warms the day with morning dew
Happiness runs in the family
And he's a boy from the good old earth and the high tree forest
And he's just about the happiest boy that I ever knew
And he's just about the happiest boy that I ever knew

Notes: This is one of my favorite Carpenters songs. The first time I remember hearing this song was on the Carpenters BBC Television Concert. More information about this and other Carpenters TV Shows can be found here.

As I've said before, this song reminds me of a song that could have easily been sung on the classic "Schoolhouse Rock" animated series.

This song is available on the "As Time Goes By" CD. More information here.
